If you experience dizziness, vertigo or imbalance and come to one of our clinics for an assessment, we will spend a lot of time looking at your eyes! We aren’t just appreciating those amazing eyelashes, we are watching for different eye movements, one of which is termed “Nystagmus”

nn

Nystagmus is a rhythmic and involuntary movement of your eyes which is characterized by a slow drift in one direction and a fast jerk back in the other direction.

n

This pattern of movement can occur side to side, up and down or even twisting or rotating one way or the other.

Nystagmus can occur most commonly due to inner ear (vestibular disorders) or from the brain. It is usually associated with feelings of vertigo or dizziness. You may also experience jumping or blurred vision, seeing the world bounce, shift or spin around you.

n

These eye movements are often more noticeable in the dark so we use infrared goggles to observe and record your eye movements more clearly while you are in the dark.

Our team of highly experienced vestibular physiotherapists are able to thoroughly evaluate your eye movements to establish the presence and pattern of any nystagmus to assist in determining the cause for your symptoms.
